How to Buy a Porsche for tez: a Review of Smartlink Marketplace

On October 10, Tezos saw the launch of the Smartlink marketplace, where you can buy and sell items for tez, SMAK, EURL, and USDT. There's already a lot of stuff there, from a packaged Gothic 3 disc to a six-bedroom house in Colombia.

The idea of Smartlink Marketplace is excellent, and the implementation is clever, but what’s most exciting is that the project has brought tez closer to the original idea of cryptocurrencies: full-fledged digital money.

How to Use Smartlink

First, you need to connect your wallet. Then, if you’re looking for an item, select the correct category. Right now, there’s everything a whale or NFT collector might be interested in—Porsche, Apple devices, and limited edition trainers.

Once you find something interesting, investigate the terms of purchase: cost, payment token, and the country where the item is located. For example, these stamps with the russian warship are sold for SMAK and come from Ukraine, so you must buy SMAK tokens and discuss delivery terms.

Then you need to click the Secure this item button to transfer the payment to an escrow contract. Active escrows are displayed in the My Payments tab on the top menu.

The final step is to tell the seller that you want to buy their product and have already deposited tokens in the escrow. Then negotiate delivery terms, receive the parcel, and send them the payment from the escrow.

To sell something, you need to click on the Post Ad button in the top menu, fill in the product offer, specify the country where it is located, and publish the ad. It’s as simple as on centralized marketplaces.

Despite the user-friendly interface, Smartlink has a problem with notifications. The person you are talking to will only see your messages when they return to the marketplace. It might be a good idea to add notifications in messengers or mail.

How Smartlink Marketplace Can Help Tezos Develop

First, the Tezos ecosystem teams can sell merch on it. TzKT cups, fx(hash) stickers, gif.games hoodies—all for tez or USDT.

Second, Smartlink could become a platform for integrating cryptocurrency payments into regular online shops. Shops will list their goods on the marketplace for USDT and EURL or even add the option to pay in tokens using Smartlink escrow.

Third, cryptocurrencies are decentralized digital currencies, and the mission of any currency is to be a universal medium of exchange. Yet, until recently, users could not directly exchange tokens for anything other than fiat money, NFTs, and other tokens. Smartlink has turned tokens into full-fledged money.

Overall, the more real use cases for tokens on Tezos, the better for the ecosystem.
